Flor Catalog Offers Carpeting by the Square
Contemporary home design hit a new low, so to speak, in the Summer Catalog 2004 from modular floor covering product Flor from Interface. The 46-page mail piece has a stylish matte-finish cover and inner pages that are slightly glossier. It features over 30 variations of just one product: adhesive, sectional pieces of carpet measuring 19-1/2" square each, in seemingly countless colors and patterns to mix and match. Six design collections have names such as New Traditions (described as "Laid back luxe" and featuring extra thick cushioning), At Ease ("Basic and authentic" with a more contemporary look) and Au Naturel ("Practical and responsible" from natural fibers). Prices range from $6.99/square for polypropylene to $15.99/square for Brazilian sisal grass. A center section enumerates the five reasons to "Love Your Flor," not only encouraging sales but also demystifying the practical matters of ordering, installation and customer service.

General Franks Urges Building of New U.S. Army Museum
Retired U.S. Army General Tommy Franks, who commanded troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in recent years, has accepted a new mission -- to help raise the capital needed to build The National Museum of the U.S. Army. The high-ranking veteran's letter was enclosed in a white 6 x 11-1/2" stretch package from the Army Historical Foundation, where he gets to the point quickly: "Dear Fellow American: Does it surprise you to learn that the U.S. Army -- the senior service -- is the only branch of America's military without a national museum to preserve and commemorate its proud heritage?" Four pages tell an abridged history of the original military branch, from its 1775 founding by the Second Continental Congress through Pearl Harbor and World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Proposed museum design features such as the outdoor parade ground, amphitheater, galleries, theaters and memorial walk are detailed, as well as plans to include hands-on exhibits that enable visitors to drive their own Bradley fighting vehicle or fly their own Blackhawk. The order form presents an ask ladder of $20/$35/$50/$100/$250/$500/$1,000/other, with step-up premiums itemized here as well as in a color companion brochure. Donors of $35 and higher gifts are given a brief history of the U.S. Army in a booklet called "225 Years of Service." Donors of $50 are designated Founding Sponsors and are given a lapel pin, while $100 donors are awarded a commemorative medallion. All donors of at least $20 are recognized with official certificates.

...And General Franks Lends His Name to The Enduring Freedom KIA Fund
Retired U.S. Army General Tommy Franks, recently head of U.S. Central Command in Iraq, also endorsed a mailing to help raise funds for The Enduring Freedom KIA Fund, which provides financial aid to the families of armed forces members "killed in Afghanistan, the Philippines and Iraq." The general's name appeared alone on a small (3-3/4" x 6-3/4") green envelope, which includes a five-page personal letter from Mrs. Christine Galewski, whose husband died while serving in Afghanistan. The young widow relates her heartbreaking story and how the killed-in-action fund helped her family have a more normal life again. A color photo of the couple with their two children accompanies the letter, as does a companion note from Franks. The reply form, on the reverse of the letter's last page, offers a donation ask ladder of $25/$35/$50/$75/$100/$500/$1,000/other.
